Delta Loop Antenna

About

A delta loop antenna is a triangular, full-wave loop antenna that is popular for its efficiency, low noise characteristics, and versatility across HF bands. Typically constructed so that the total wire length equals one wavelength at the desired frequency, the delta loop can be mounted with the apex up or down and fed from either a corner or the center of a side, depending on the desired polarization and radiation pattern. When mounted vertically and fed at a corner, it often produces a low takeoff angle that is excellent for DX contacts, while a horizontally oriented loop can favor regional or NVIS communication. Many amateur operators appreciate the delta loop because it tends to receive more quietly than some vertical antennas, offers good bandwidth, and can be used on multiple bands with an antenna tuner, making it a practical and effective choice for both home stations and portable operations.

Chameleon Tactical Delta Loop

The Chameleon Tactical Delta Loop (CHA TDL) is a portable high-frequency (HF) antenna system from Chameleon Antenna designed for quick deployment, compact footprint, and versatile operation across amateur radio bands. It’s engineered to cover frequencies from roughly 3.5 MHz up to 54 MHz (80-6 m), with particularly strong performance on the 30 through 6 meter bands, and provides useful Near-Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) capability on the lower bands when paired with an antenna tuner. The system combines two 17-foot telescoping whip antennas, a 25-foot loop wire, a 5:1 matching transformer and hub, and a simple ground spike mount (can also mount on a tripod or mast), allowing configuration as an inverted delta loop or a ground-mounted vertical for improved efficiency, lower noise, and broadside directionality compared to many vertical antennas. Its design emphasizes portability and ease of setup—typically achievable in about five minutes by a single operator—making it popular for portable operations, backyard use with antenna restrictions, emergency communications (EMCOMM), and field activities where rapid assembly and multi-band capability are valuable.
