Vertical Antennas

About Verticals

A tall antenna setup on a grassy field near a lake under a clear blue sky.

Vertical antennas are popular for their compact footprint, low takeoff angle, and strong performance on the HF bands, making them excellent for DX contacts. Unlike horizontal antennas, a vertical radiates equally in all directions (omnidirectional), which means no rotor is required to change direction. When installed with a proper ground system—such as buried or elevated radials—a vertical can be highly efficient and surprisingly effective even in small yards or portable setups like POTA activations. They are often easier to erect than large beam antennas and can cover multiple bands with traps, linked radials or matching networks. While they may be more susceptible to local noise compared to horizontal antennas, their ability to launch signals at low angles toward the horizon makes them a favorite choice for operators chasing long-distance contacts.

Class of Their Own

In the drop-down menu you'll find Vertical Antennas that I have put into a class of their own, like the:

Coil Verticals

Coil antennas are shortened vertical radiators that use a loading coil to make the antenna resonate on lower HF bands while keeping the overall height manageable. The coil—often placed at the base or mid-section—adds inductance that electrically lengthens the antenna, allowing a physically short whip to operate effectively on bands like 6-80 meters. These antennas are especially popular for mobile installations and portable operations such as POTA, where a full-size quarter-wave vertical would be too tall. Although vertical coil antennas typically have narrower bandwidth and slightly reduced efficiency compared to full-length verticals, good coil design, quality ground radials, and careful tuning can provide strong low-angle radiation that performs well for DX contacts.
